Science: Teacher-Facilitated Exploration Station

God made our wonderful bodies. In this unit, children will be introduced to their creator by making tangible replicas of their bodies. Our bodies help us explore His beautiful world. The children will learn:

  • To describe how bodies are the same and how they are different
  • The functions and names of the parts of the body
  • To understand the basic function of each organ
  • Why bones are important to the body
  • How the heart works
  • How the circulatory system works
  • How the lung works

Science Lessons

  • Science is a way for children to explore and discover about themselves and the world around them. It is important not to rush them through the process. Two science lessons are provided for each week but if the children are enjoying the discovery of one particular lesson and show interest in continuing to explore and experiment for a longer period of time with that lesson then continue to provide them with the opportunity. The second lesson can be saved for another day or year.
  • Science Data Sheets - Many of the science lessons have a science data sheet that can be printed out for the children to record their data. These sheets can be placed in a book to create a science journal.

Science Processes and Vocabulary

Observing - To pay close attention to what is being done or said

Inferring - To make a conclusion or generalization based on observation or experience

Communicating - To give information about someone or something by talking or writing

Measuring - To use a tool to view how tall, short, full, or empty something is

Predicting - To try to guess what may happen in the experiment

Making Models - To make an example of something

Experimenting - To test something and see what the outcome is and learn from it

Once the children have had some time to learn the science process vocabulary, write the words and definitions on pieces of paper and place them in the science area for easy reference. Add pictures from previous experiments that relate to the vocabulary if available.

Science Exploration Station

It is important to provide science experiences where children are able to perform science experiments. Teachers can provide one or more of the materials for children to practice.

Materials to add to the Science exploration station:

  • Books and pictures about the body
  • Books and pictures about doctors, nurses, other health professionals
  • Plastic skeleton
  • X-rays
  • Body puzzles
  • Activities from the lessons
