In Advance

What You Will Need

Be sure to gather the following items before class.

  • Black crayon or heavy marker (non-toxic)
  • Butcher paper
  • Mirrors (unbreakable) - available from NASCO Science
  • Scissors

Cut the butcher paper into lengths that will fit the full height of each of child. Have enough sheets of butcher paper to provide at least one for each child. You should have several additional sheets available. It will be helpful to have some adult assistance with this activity to help speed up the process of getting the body outlines drawn and cut out.

Engage and Introduce

Explain to the children that they will begin the process of making a model of their body and that they will each be laying down on a big piece of butcher paper as the a teacher draws an outline of their body. Over the next few lessons they will begin to add and identify their body parts on the model of their body.

Show the picture of the body with the names of the body parts that is provided. Review the names of each body part and have the children show where that body part is on their body.

Apply

Show the children the picture below.

Teacher: What makes up your body?

Point out the main features of the body. Have children point to their head as you point to the head on the drawing. Repeat this process with the other body parts: hair, face, ear, eye, mouth, neck, shoulder, arm, hand, finger, chest, stomach, leg, knee, foot, toe.

Provide each child a plastic mirror and let them take time to see their face and other parts of the body. Have children describe what they observe.

  • A fun addition would be to have children bring pictures of their family so they can point out the different body parts of their family members.

Body Models

Make full-body models of children on the butcher paper. As quickly as possible, have each child lay down on a piece of butcher paper with arms and legs outstretched. Use the crayon or marker to trace around the body of the child and then cut out the outline. Provide crayons and have children begin to color their body models while their classmates are getting their body outlines made. Encourage children to be as realistic with their artwork as possible.

Assessment

Observe if the children are able to not only name their body parts, but also that they also understand the function of each one.

Closure and Celebrate

King David said in Psalm 139:14 that God made our bodies to be wonderful. Aren't you glad God made your wonderful eyes to help you see the environment He made, and ears to hear all the bird chirping each day, feet to explore, and hands to do more? God made you so great!

CREATION Kids Connections

Begin by singing the song, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. Once the song has been sung a few times explain to the children that they will be asked to find the body parts the teacher says on their own body. Ask the children, show me your head, show me your arm, show me your leg, etc.

Hand out small hand held mirrors so the children can look at themselves and see their different body parts in the mirror.

My Body

Have the children draw a picture of their bodies (which will be very abstract) and point and name parts. Write down the words the children say in the areas that they point to on the picture of their body.

Once all the body models are complete, review the picture of the parts of the body that was discussed at the beginning of the lesson. If the body part is not shown on the model, have children point to where the part should be such as the back, heel, wrist, toes etc.

Provide crayons for children to write the name of the body part on their body model. Leave the picture of the body out so the children can copy the words.

WHAT TO PREPARE FOR NEXT TIME

  • Full Body Model (Part 2)
