Small Group Activity
Name Sorting
- Children's names on strips of paper
- Labels for objects around the room
- Picture chart with pictures of the children and items around the room
- Camera
- Poster board
- Marker
Prior to the lesson, create a chart with the pictures of the children in the class, teacher and items they would find in the room.
Show the chart to the children and explain to them that they will be choosing names labels from a bag. Once they hear the name they drew they will need to decide if it belongs to a person or an item. Then they will need to find the correct picture that the name goes to on the chart and place the label there
You want to reinforce that objects and people have names. This idea will be helpful when the children begin to understand that letters have names.
Allow the children to take turns reaching in the bag to pull out a name.
Apply
Children will take a name out of the bag. Read the label to the children. If the label is a child's name then the child will find the picture of that person on the chart and place the label under/next to the picture. When the label describes an object in the room then have the child place the label under/next to the correct picture . Continue in this way until all the labels have been sorted. Emphasize to the children the fact that objects have names. This will be important when the children begin to name letters. This activity begins to lay a foundation for letter identification.
- When reading the names of the children and items emphasize the sound of the first letter of the name.
- Ask children if they know what the sound of the first letter of each name is. See if they can remember and repeat.
- Ask children if they know the name of the first letter of each name of a person or item.
Assessment
Notice how well children were able to sort the pictures of children and objects as well as give the name of each.
Closure and Celebrate
Humans like to label things because it helps us remember and match things or ideas together. Jesus was given the label of Healer and that matches Him well because He really enjoyed healing people. He was also given the label of Friend because He was a great friend to all people. Most importantly, He is given the label of Savior because He came to save all who believe in Him. CREATION Kids know and love Jesus, the Healer, Friend, and Savior.
CREATION Kids Connections
Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes is a good book to extend this lesson. This book talks about names.
Name Game
Have children sit in a circle. Have children introduce themselves by telling their first name to the group. Then see if the children can remember the names of all those in the group. For more fun, have children introduce themselves by telling their first and last name to the group. Then see who can remember each child's first and last name.
